Fish, shrimp tacos prevalent for Lent

Taco Bell, Whataburger and Del Taco are among the quick-service chains promoting seafood tacos for the Lenten season.

Starting this week, Pacific Shrimp Tacos and Pacific Shrimp Burritos are available at Taco Bell as limited-time offers. The items are filled with six shrimp in a chipotle marinade, pepper, onion, garlic and paprika. In addition to the shrimp, the taco is topped with lettuce, salsa and avocado ranch sauce. The burrito features the same ingredients plus Taco Bell’s three cheese blend and red strips. The taco and burrito are available for USD 2.79 and USD 3.69, respectively.

Taco Bell is also airing nationally a 30-second TV commercial titled “Shrimp Crashers,” in which two shrimp-loving guys scour the globe in search of the world’s best-tasting shrimp, only to end up at Taco Bell. Taco Bell — owned by Yum Brands!, which also operates quick-service seafood chain Long John Silver’s — has more than 5,800 restaurants in the United States.

San Antonio, Texas-based hamburger chain Whataburger is also jumping on the Lenten bandwagon, offering its customers a Whatacatch fish taco through 1 May. The Whatacatch taco includes breaded, sliced whitefish wrapped in a warm flour tortilla with lettuce and spicy tartar sauce. Whataburger has about 700 locations in the United States.

And Del Taco recently launched a Baja shrimp taco for USD 2.19 featuring shrimp, cabbage, salsa and a tangy Baja sauce in a warm flour tortilla. It also added a Baja shrimp burrito to its lineup for USD 3.69, featuring shrimp, cabbage, seasoned rice, salsa and Baja sauce. The Lake Forest, Calif.-based chain has more than 520 locations in 18 U.S. states.
