Stop & Shop highlights local seafood for summer

Stop & Shop is featuring additional sustainable local seafood selections as part of an annual summer promotion.

The Quincy, Massachusetts, U.S.A.-based operator of more than 400 stores is bringing in fresh catches from well-known local seafood purveyors such as: Lobster Trap in Bourne, Massachusetts; Ipswich Shellfish Group in Ipswich, Massachusetts; Madison Seafood in Newark, New Jersey; and Sunrise Lobster Co. in Brookhaven, New York.

The retailer will feature the local seafood – including oysters, mussels, lobster, and fresh clam chowder – at more than 100 stores. The stores will include “Shop Local” signage in its fresh seafood departments, as well as a chalkboard easel featuring the catch of the day.

“As a leading East Coast supermarket, we know how important seafood is to our customers,” Stop & Shop Seafood Category Manager Beth Grant said in a press release. “Our local seafood program highlights our commitment to providing our customers with what they want: fresh, delicious, and responsibly sourced seafood.”

Family-owned Sunrise Lobster Co. has delivered fresh seafood on Long Island, New York, for more than 40 years, according to Stop & Shop. Lobster Trap buys sustainable lobster and seafood direct from the boat. Madison Seafood only works with sustainable fisheries with traceable products, Stop & Shop said, while Ipswich Shellfish Group delivers fresh local seafood to area businesses.

Stop & Shop sells only seafood from sustainable fisheries and farms that prevent overfishing and that can be traced to its source. It works with the Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI) to assess whether seafood items entering stores meet the criteria set forth by Stop & Shop’s seafood policy.

Earlier this year, Stop & Shop also began working with the Ocean Disclosure Project, making the original sources of its private label and wild-caught seafood available to customers.
