Thanks, in part, to its Premium Fish Fillet Sandwich, Zagat's rated Wendy's the most popular U.S. fast-food chain with more than 5,000 restaurants.
In Zagat's 2009 Fast Food Survey, released on Monday, Wendy's placed first in the Top Food and Top Facilities categories and second in the Top Service category, as well as in the top five in seven other categories, including Best Fish. Wendy's heavily promoted its Premium Fish Fillet Sandwich, which is made with Pacific cod, during Lent.
"We are thrilled that Americans put Wendy's at the top of the Zagat survey," said David Karam, Wendy's president. "The results are a true testament to Wendy's everyday commitment to freshness, quality and great customer service."
Placing atop the Best Fish category was Long John Silver's, the United States' largest quick-service seafood chain, with more than 1,200 restaurants worldwide. McDonald's finished second in the category, followed by Captain D's, Burger King and Wendy's.
In Zagat's 2009 Full Service Survey, Red Lobster, the United States' biggest casual seafood chain with 680 restaurants across North America, placed atop the Best Seafood category. P.F. Chang's China Bistro finished second in the category, trailed by Cheesecake Factory, Outback Steakhouse and Carrabba's Italian Grill.
P.F. Chang's was rated the most popular U.S. full-service chain, placing first in the Top Food and Top Facilities categories and second in the Top Service category.
No quick- or full-service seafood chains placed in the top five in the Best Value category.
"These chains offer a lot of value to diners, and in the current economic times that's more important than ever," said Tim Zagat, CEO of Zagat Survey. "Given the large number of such chains, even the most avid fast food aficionado may need help in figuring out what's best."
More than 6,100 Americans participated in the Zagat survey.
