Will Crayfish-Skewers take the prize?

Only one Spanish company is among the 36 finalists for the ninth annual Seafood Prix d'Elite New Product Competition at next month's European Seafood Exposition.

Alfocan SA of Sevilla, Spain, was singled out for its Crayfish-Skewers – 100 percent natural, cooked, peeled and deveined crayfish-tails prepared using modified atmosphere packaging and presented in a transparent tray. The organoleptic characteristics are preserved, giving the product a 10-day shelf-life.

Ready-to-eat and suitable for gentle browning on the griddle, Crayfish-Skewers have been developed especially for the foodservice sector. Due to the flexibility of skewer lengths, the number of crayfish tails per skewer and quantity of skewers per unit, a range of foodservice operators will find this a versatile product.

Adding to its international appeal, the Crayfish-Skewers can be seasoned and marinated according to a variety of regional and national tastes at maximum convenience.

One of Europe's largest processors and marketers of Procambarus clarkii, Alfocan catch the crayfish in a traditional manner in the south Iberian peninsula.

"We are quite busy this time of the year with our crayfish season about to start, preparations for Brussels, the Prix d'Elite, etc. We welcome visitors to [hall 5, stand 150] for more detailed information on our prize-nominated product and our full range of added-value seafood," said Klaus Baumann, the company's marketing director.

Prix d'Elite winners will be announced during the show and reception in Auditorium 2000 of the Brussels Exhibition Grounds on 28 April. In addition to the two grand prizes for the best new retail and foodservice products, five special awards will be presented for seafood product line, convenience, packaging, originality, and health and nutrition.

This year, the finalists represent 22 companies from 11 countries and four continents.
