Young’s Seafood launches new ‘modern retro’ cod pack

A collaboration with food packaging manufacturer Linpac has given Grimsby, U.K.-based Young’s Seafood’s cod products a whole new look, designed to appeal to the ‘modern retro’ sensibilities of emerging consumer groups.

The new modified atmosphere package (MAP) features a newsprint motif on both sides of the tray intended to enhance the on-shelf appeal of Young’s beer-battered cod fillets for retailers. The newsprint appearance is meant to elicit the typical presentation of takeaway fish and chips, which is usually wrapped in newspaper.

Linpac utilized a tray thermoforming process to laminate the newpaper graphic to a transparent rPET sheet. The company worked closely with the Young’s Seafood packaging core to design and execute the tray, presenting a number of different concepts to the team in an effort to come up with a container fit to be launched in surrounding ASDA retail locations in the United Kingdom.

“We’re thrilled with the final result,” said Helen Nickells, head of packaging development at Young’s Seafood, in a news release.“The striking design really stands out on shelf and achieves a ‘wrapped in print feel’ that’s unlike anything else on the market. By working in partnership with Linpac we’ve achieved a high level of innovation that meets all the core standards we require of our packaging.”

“This was certainly a fully collaborative process. It was important to create a seamless look and we managed this by working closely with our customer, Young’s Seafood,” added Andrew Wilkinson, account director at Linpac. “It was critical we worked as a cohesive team with our print partners, Parkside Flexibles, as well as our Linpac film business colleagues in Pontivy, France. We’re delighted to have delivered a solution that is reminiscent of classic newspaper print, along with the high-level of convenience that’s required by today’s consumer."
