Aller Aqua, a fish feed producer, and TripleNine, a marine ingredients producer, have announced a research collaboration targeting greater yield and sustainability from marine ingredients.
The two Denmark-based companies have both taken part in the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals “Accelerator Program,” initiated by the U.N. Sustainable Development Partnership. Through the program, the two companies are working together to evaluate the best way to use raw materials – like fishmeal and fish oil – to achieve nutrition goals in farmed fish.
“TripleNine fishmeal and fish oil is of highest quality and essential valuable ingredients for the aquafeed producers. We are confident, that newly developed products will help to further improve the performance of aquaculture by increasing fish health and growth,” Kenneth Storbank, chief commercial officer at TripleNine, said in a release. “As the aquaculture sector aims to increase sustainability, we, as marine ingredient developers, need to aid the process by introducing and actively collaborate for testing product improvements and alternatives to the already known products.”
The partnership, according to a release from Aller Aqua, will allow TripleNine to evaluate new raw materials and test their effectiveness before having to release them to the market.
“Marine raw materials form the basis of many high-quality fish feeds. In this collaboration with marine raw material expert TripleNine, we are aiming to make maximum use of marine raw materials and their functional components for optimizing feed performance,” Dr. Hanno Slawski, research and development director at Aller Aqua, said. “Value addition to marine ingredients will also promote the continuous sustainable use of marine resources in fish feed, by making the most out of them.”
Targeted use of a particular raw material’s functional properties is a main goal of the collaboration, which focuses on increasing the performance of fish feed for the amount of raw marine materials used.
“Research is the ultimate tool to make continuous advances in the aquaculture value chain, and collaboration to achieve shared goals will accelerate this agenda,” states the Aller Aqua release. “Aller Aqua Research continuously test raw materials for efficiency and performance, and the close collaboration with TripleNine will allow the company to evaluate new raw materials before they are released into the market.”
