Compassion in World Farming introduces salmon welfare scorecard

Compassion in World Farming (CIWF) has officially launched its new salmon welfare scorecard. 

The Godalming, England-based non-governmental organization’s Fish and Welfare Program, which advocates for improved fish welfare in the commercial aquaculture sector, hosted a booth at the 2023 Seafood Expo Global – which ran from 25 to 27 April in Barcelona, Spain – in order to give it a platform to announce the soft launch of its new scorecard.

CIWF works to ensure major seafood companies have the data and information needed to raise fish in the most-ethical manner possible.

“We work providing the fish with opportunities to have a positive experience during life. That means giving them with the best conditions possible, so they can have the best chance to develop all their behavioral repertoire,” CIWF Fish Welfare Research Manager Daniel Sanchez Lacalle told SeafoodSource.

At SEG, Sanchez Lacalle and his team introduced the salmon welfare scorecard tool, which makes available public policies and scientific reporting to analyze fish welfare issues through all stages of salmon's life-cycle. The platform includes extensive research on the specific farming practices of nine of the industry’s largest salmon producers.

“The tool has been designed to communicate improving the communication between retailers and producers," Sanchez Lacalle said.
