Aquafeed and animal health provider Skretting has opened a new factory in southern Vietnam to produce aquafeed.
The Norway-based company began work on the project in March 2021. It will have an expected cost of EUR 24 million (USD 25 million), with the capacity to produce 100,000 metric tons (MT) of feed products annually from its two production lines.
The new plant, called Lotus II, is located on a 20,800-square-meter area in Thuan Dao Industrial Zone in Long An province, according to the Long An provincial newspaper. The location was chosen for its logistical proximity to the major aquaculture production area in the Mekong Delta. Through the new facility, Skretting also aims to supply aquafeed to other countries in Southeast Asia.
Skretting entered Vietnam in 2010 with the acquisition of local fish and shrimp feed producer Tomboy Aquafeed JSC, and opened a shrimp feed plant in 2017. In the intervening years, Skretting said it has improved its operational performance in the country, from research and raw material procurement to products and services for the aquaculture sector.
In October 2019, Skretting launched the “SUCCESS” program, which aims to reduce production costs increase profitability of the country's shrimp-farming operations. The company said "SUCCESS" program's sustainable shrimp-farming model has helped increase operational profitability in the region by between 30 and 40 percent compared to traditional farming models.
On 4 March, 2022, Skretting announced a planned USD 6.1 million (EUR 5.1 million) research and development facility in Ecuador. The move is intended to support the shrimp sector – the fastest-growing aquaculture protein, with global annual growth expected to reach 4 to 5 percent. The company opened the facility on 18 October, 2022.
Skretting is owned by Nutreco, a global company specializing in animal nutrition and aquafeed.
