Acme Smoked Fish Corp. purchases Massachusetts-based fish smoker

Acme Smoked Fish Corp. has acquired 100 percent of Brockton, Massachusetts, U.S.A.-based Spence & Co. from Philippines-based Alliance Select.

The purchase price was not disclosed in the company’s announcement. Alliance Select purchased Spence & Co. for USD 8.5 million (EUR 7.7 million) in 2011.

“We are thrilled to welcome Spence & Co. to the Acme family, bringing together two like- minded family businesses,” Acme Smoked Fish co-CEO David Caslow said. “Our shared values and commitment to producing quality and delicious smoked fish products make this an exciting time to work together.”

Spence & Co., Ltd. was founded in 1989 by Scottish fish smoker Alan Spence. The company uses traditional Scottish production methods, smoking over oakwood, to produce a variety of premium smoked salmon, trout, haddock, and whitefish. Among the company’s most well-known products are Smoked Salmon Pinwheels and Petit Fours, Smoked Salmon Torta, Smoked Fish Pates, Lox in a Box grab-n-go lunch, and Laird’s Smoked Salmon Loin.

“By joining forces with Acme, we will have a tremendous opportunity for growth and innovation,”Spence & Co. Director of Sales Tom Higgins said. “Our team looks forward to collaborating on research and development and product sourcing, among other areas, as we explore new markets for our product line.”

Acme, a family-owned smoked fish purveyor which recently expanded its primary processing facility in Brooklyn, New York, said in a press release the companies will continue to operate independently and offer products from their own respective brand names.

Acme offers an extensive line of hot- and cold-smoked fish and has been recognized for product innovation, including being named to  the 2019 SeafoodSource Top 25 Seafood Product Innovations list for its Blue Hill Bay Smoked Fish Poke Bowls. Acme’s products are sold by retail and foodservice outlets under the Acme, Blue Hill Bay, Ruby Bay, and Great American brands across the U.S.

After the transaction, “Acme will continue to offer its diverse line of exceptional smoked fish, complimented by Spence & Co’s premium quality products,” the company said.
