Some sushi containing shrimp is being recalled after Hyderabad, India-based Avanti Frozen Foods, a subsidiary of Thai Union, expanded its recall of frozen cooked shrimp sold at major U.S. retailers due to salmonella illnesses.

Allentown, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.-based Mai Franchising Inc. is voluntarily recalling 103 packs of sushi and nigiri containing cocktail shrimp for products purchased in the U.S. state of California. The products were sold in a handful of New Leaf Community Market stores throughout California.

In addition to the sushi recall by Mai Franchising, Genji Pacific LLC – also of Allentown, Pennsylvania – is voluntarily recalling 1,490 packs of its sushi containing cocktail shrimp for products purchased in California. Both recalls stem from the Avanti shrimp recall.

Since late April, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the Centers for Disease Control, and state and local agencies have been investigating a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella Weltevreden infections linked to frozen cooked shrimp manufactured by Avanti.

Nine people have become ill from eating the shrimp and three were hospitalized, the FDA said in a press release.

In June, Avanti recalled several lots of the shrimp, including major retail brands such as Safeway’s Waterfront Bistro, Whole Foods’ 365, Censea, Chicken of the Sea, Hannaford, Meijer, Open Acres, Honest Catch, and CWNO.

Since late July, additional cases have been identified in the outbreak and the investigation was reopened.

“At least one ill person consumed shrimp that are not a part of the current recall,” the FDA said in a press release

Mai Sushi initiated the recall after Avanti Frozen Foods expanded its recall to a particular lot of frozen shrimp received at some of the sushi supplier’s California locations.

“Although these products have a shelf life of one day, the firm is initiating this recall to ensure customer safety,” Mai Sushi said in a press release.
