Greenhead Lobster recalls 5,749 pounds of lobster meat over listeria concerns

Stonington, Maine, U.S.A.-based Greenhead Lobster Products is recalling 5,749 pounds of frozen cooked lobster meat because of potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.

No illnesses have been reported, Greenhead Owner Hugh Reynolds told SeafoodSource. The company is issuing the voluntary recall after an unannounced FDA audit of the company’s records from the past year revealed that it was in violation of some FDA regulations, according to Reynolds.

“There was no review of the product, and no evidence of listeria in the product,” Reynolds said. However, there were some samples found in the environment to be positive for listeria, along with record-keeping compliance that led to the recall, he said.

"If you can’t dot a long list of I’s and T’s to demonstrate that you have killed the listeria that is evident on all lobster, [you are not compliant],” he said.

The recall was initiated out of an abundance of caution due to the potential for contamination, the company said in a press release.

“Through training, research, sanitation, and application of the most current seafood handling practices, we strive for continuous improvement,” Greenhead said. “Therefore, we will continue to conduct routine testing on our products and adhere to our strict sanitation protocols to always keep customer safety as our priority.”
