A U.S. seafood importer is recalling more than 120,000 pounds of catfish that that were imported from Bangladesh and Myanmar, which are ineligible to export siluriformes fish to the U.S.
Woodside, New York-based Premium Foods USA, Inc., is recalling around 121,151 pounds of various siluriformes fish products in part because they were not presented for import re-inspection, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) said in a press release.
The new recall is just the latest in a rash of recalls after importers said they are unaware that the USDA is now overseeing catfish imports.
However, Premium Foods also recalled approximately 76,025 pounds of various frozen catfish products that were not presented for import re-inspection into the U.S. in late July.
In the new Premium recall, the USDA said that the products were imported from Bangladesh and Myanmar on various dates from 20 March, 2018, through 4 May, 2019. Several products, which include Shahjalal There is no Equal Long Whiskered Fish, were shipped to retail locations in Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Michigan, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.
“The problem was discovered during routine FSIS surveillance activities of imported products,” FSIS said.
FSIS is concerned that some product may be in consumers’ freezers.
“Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase,” FSIS said.
