Multi X has launched a new salmon product that is certified as being carbon-neutral.
The Puerto Montt, Chile-based salmon-farming firm claims the frozen D-trim fillets are the first certified carbon-neutral Chilean salmon available in the U.S. market. They will make their official U.S. debut at the 2023 Seafood Expo North America in Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A. from 12 to 14 March.
There are several companies and nonprofits that offer carbon-neutral certification. Multi X partnered with Climate Impact Partners CarbonNeutral certification was created by Climate Impact Partners, an outgrowth of London, U.K.-based Natural Capital Partners, which created the certification’s standards in 2002. It requires companies to reduce their emissions to net zero using both internal reductions and the purchase of external environmental instruments such as carbon credits and energy attribute certificates. It has certified more than 600 carbon removal and reduction projects in 56 countries.
“In addition to our zero waste to landfill commitment, already achieved in 2020 in our processing plants, our 100 percent CarbonNeutral certified product gives retailers the opportunity to provide a sustainable option for shoppers. Consumer trends show that environmental impacts from the foods they eat are relevant drivers for their buying decisions,” Multi X Sales and Marketing Officer Fernando Pérez said in a press release. "By buying our 100 percent CarbonNeutral certified products, consumers are helping develop local communities and increasing green energy infrastructures in addition to their impact on the environment. When Multi X Salmon reaches the dinner table, families can feel confident their meal is making a difference in taking care of our planet.”
Multi X, which runs its U.S. distribution operations out of Miami, Florida, U.S.A., said the new product was part of the company’s commitment to “feeding the future by advocating and promoting responsible solutions that meet the growing global demand for protein.”
“We are launching a new line of products according to our purpose of nourishing the future, caring for the world,” Multi X Chief of Sustainability and Corporate Affairs Francisco Lobos said. “Multi X continues to work on CarbonNeutral certification for other product lines as it drives to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030.”
The company, formerly known as Multiexport, was the first salmon producer to be ranked in both the Dow Jones Sustainability Index and Coller FAIRR Protein Producer Index. It has committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2030,
In June 2022, it teamed with BioMar and Food 4 the Future to pilot Chile’s first feeding plant incorporating products made from insect protein instead of fishmeal.
In April 2022, Multi X shareholders approved agricultural giant Cargill’s 24.5 percent purchase of the company.
