Walmart e-commerce sales nearly doubled in Q2

Walmart’s e-commerce sales soared 97 percent in its second quarter, highlighting the increasing online opportunities for seafood suppliers.

Other major U.S. retailers have experienced similar online sales spikes since the COVID-19 pandemic began this spring.

Amazon’s grocery e-commerce sales tripled in the second quarter of this year and it hit USD 7.2 billion (EUR 6.1 billion) in grocery sales in June. In the past six months, Amazon has tripled its overall grocery delivery capacity and its total number of grocery pickup locations, it said in a press release.

And Boise, Idaho-based Albertsons reported a 276 percent hike in e-commerce sales in its most recent quarter – its first as a public company.

Wall Street analysts had expected sales on Walmart.com to rise 60 percent, Fortune reported.

"We're pleased with the progress we're making with Walmart.com," Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said on a conference call, according to Fortune. "The tailwinds we are experiencing are accelerating our progress to build a healthier e-commerce business as we add new brands and improve product mix.”

Walmart did not reveal the percentage of its e-commerce sales that can be attributed to grocery items, but noted “strong [e-commerce] results across all channels” in a press release.

Sam’s Club e-commerce sales also spiked 39 percent in the quarter, while member count increased more than 60 percent.

Walmart’s total revenue rose 5.6 percent to reach USD 137.7 billion (EUR 116 billion), and its same-store sales climbed 9.3 percent.

Walmart also recently partnered with Instacart for same-day delivery in a limited pilot project.
