Ecuador: April 2020 shrimp sourcing update

Ecuador's Cámara Nacional de Acuacultura predicted Ecuador’s production volume to approach 700,000 metric tons in 2020. Little did it know then that the COVID-19 outbreak would get a hold on trade the way it did.

By the time demand from China began to show signs of recovery in early April, Ecuador was hit by the outbreak, right in the heart of its shrimp industry: The Guayas Province and Guayaquil.

2020 will clearly be a year of uncertainty and transition. Whether Ecuador will reach its desired 10-15 percent increase is unclear. But China will again play a big role in reaching that goal and the diversification of markets will have to wait until 2021 ...
