Norwegian seafood shipments to China rebound strongly in Q3

Norway has seen a major recovery in its exports of salmon and seafood in general to China in the third quarter of 2021.

Norwegian salmon shipments to China rose 190 percent year-on-year for the July-September period, going from 2,433 metric tons (MT) in Q3 2020 to 7,086 MT in Q3 2021. The growth was even stronger in value terms – a rise of 282 percent, from NOK 563 million (EUR 56.3 million, USD 67.5 million) to NOK 147 million (USD 17.6 million, EUR 14.7 million).

“As we know, last year was a special year for salmon to China, so its a very strong recovery if just compared to the third quarter,” Andreas Thorud, director of the China office of the Norwegian Seafood Council, told SeafoodSource.

Overall shipments of seafood from Norway to China more than doubled in the third quarter, hitting 54,248 MT compared to 26,373 MT in the same period last year. There was an 111 percent increase in value terms, from NOK 732 million (EUR 73.2 million, USD 87.8 million) to NOK 1.5 billion (EUR 150 million, USD 180 million).

Two Norwegian salmon firms – Leroy Seafood AS and Sjor AS – recently signed distribution agreements with Ocean Family (Da Yang Shi Jia), a major Chinese fishery firm and seafood processor and distributor based on the country’s prosperous east coast. The agreement was signed at a government-organized agricultural trade promotion event in the city of Zhoushan. Ocean Family previously announced it is planning to list on the Shanghai Stock Exchange to fund further expansion of its distribution business.
