Number of plant-based seafood analog offerings soaring in 2020

The World Sustainability Organization and The Good Food Institute Sustainable Seafood Initiative’s new plant-based seafood certification will be part of the WSO’s Friend of the Sea certification program.

The Friend of the Sea Golden Standard will “help plant-based seafood companies certify their products according to sustainable certification criteria of the WSO’s Friend of the Earth agriculture standards,” Friends of the Earth said on its website.

The standard will also assure consumers that products have been made by adopting sustainable practices without harming the environment.

An increasing number of plant-based seafood analog products have entered the market over the past two years.

Even food giant Nestle recently entered the market with a tuna analog that has the “flaky texture and rich flavor that makes tuna a favorite in many meals,” the food manufacturer said in a press release.

The Plant Based Seafood Company, a new seafood analog product venture formed by the owners of the Van Cleve Seafood Co., recently nabbed significant pre-seed funding and purchased a new production facility to grow distribution of its Mind Blown brand.

In addition to Mind Blown Dusted Shrimp, Naked Shrimp, Crab-like Crab Cakes, and Crunchy Coconut Shrimp – sold online and in Publix GreenWise Markets – the Plant Based Seafood Co. recently launched a plant-based scallop analog: Dusted Bay Scallops.

Meanwhile, Gathered Foods, which makes Good Catch plant-based seafood products, said in a press release that it partnered with Veggie Grill, a plant-based fast casual restaurant.

From October through the end of the year, Veggie Grill will add a limited-edition exclusive Tuna Melt to the menu featuring Good Catch's Plant Based Tuna, “giving conscious consumers the opportunity to enjoy a classic and indulgent tuna melt without contributing to known issues like overfishing or exposure to harmful heavy metals,” Gathered Foods said.

“This partnership is Good Catch's first foray into the restaurant industry, with a larger retail expansion planned in the next few months.”
