US importer recalls catfish mislabeled as tilapia

Brooklyn, New York, U.S.A.-based You Chang Trading is recalling an undetermined amount of raw siluriformes fish products labeled as tilapia.

The recalled products, labeled “Conway Tilapia Fillets, Product of Hong Kong,” were not presented for import re-inspection by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), the agency said in a press release.

“We can’t speculate if the mislabeing was intentional or not,” Buck McKay, public affairs specialist with FSIS, told SeafoodSource. FSIS conducted routine testing on a sample of the “tilapia” product, and found that it was multiple species of catfish.

The frozen, raw siluriformes fish filet items were produced between 13 November, 2018, and 5 January, 2019. The 22-pound white cardboard included lot codes 20181113, 20181203, or 20190105, and sell by dates of 11/16/2020, 12/03/2020, or 01/05/2021.

They were shipped to distributors and retailers in Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania.

“FSIS is concerned that some product may be in consumers’ freezers. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase,” the agency said.
