Mathias Bjørge begins production at new salmon-processing facility

Alesund, Norway-based seafood company Mathias Bjørge has officially begun production at its new salmon-processing facility on the island of Ellingsøya, located just outside of Alesund.

Mathias Bjørge announced it was planning a major expansion in salmon with support from Marel in December 2024 and that it was planning to employ artificial intelligence on a new production line capable of handling 25 fish per minute. The company said that line is now open and is capable of supplying “everything from IVP portions and chain-pack portions to various types of fillets, as well as private-label programs and custom cuts.”

“This is a huge milestone for our family-owned company, and it is proof of our long-term commitment to our customers worldwide,” Mathias Bjørge CEO Torgeir Bjørge said of the new facility.

The company said that on top of the processing technology from Marel, it has also employed digital solutions from Maritech allowing it to precisely grade and automate trimming.

“With this facility, we’re able to meet strict customer specifications with a level of consistency that wasn’t possible for us before,” Bjørge said. “It’s a milestone for our company and an investment in the next decades of Norwegian seafood production.”

To support the new production capacity, the company said it has also established dedicated sales in Norway via Mathias Salmon for and in the U.S. via Mathias Americas LLC. 

The company first announced its plans to branch into salmon in 2024, based on the projected completion of its new facility in 2025.

“The launch marks a major step in the company’s long-term growth strategy, expanding its portfolio to include fresh and frozen Norwegian salmon portions and fillets produced with state-of-the-art technology,” the company said.
