Algal oil production company Veramaris has partnered with Merwetank, a tank storage company in the Netherlands, to enhance its supply chain in Europe.
Veramaris develops and produces an algal oil that contains EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids and recently reached full operational capacity in 2024. The company opened a production facility in Blair, Nebraska, U.S.A., in July 2019 and has been producing aquaculture feed that is free of marine ingredients by using its algal oil.
The company said in a release its new partnership with Merwetank the construction of a large bulk algae oil storage tank, which will be located in Dordrecht near Rotterdam in the Netherlands. The new facility will begin operations in mid-Q4 2025, and Veramaris said it will increase supply security and logistical efficiency for the company’s customers in Europe.
"This new setup brings our product much closer to customers’ existing supply chains," Veramaris CFO Holger Kinzel said. "It’s a great example of how we’re scaling up with our partners to support bulk deliveries and the continued growth of sustainable aquaculture."
Veramaris said the new tank will allow the company to ship more of its algae oil in bulk to Europe. That will also enable it to ship oil and other raw materials directly to coastal aquafeed factories, “reducing costs, complexity, and carbon emissions.”
Merwetank will operate the storage facility, which it said includes advanced features to preserve the quality of Veramaris’ algal oil.
"Our journey with Veramaris has been one of genuine partnership and collaboration," Merwetank Director Wout de Jong said. "We chose to work with them not only because we believe in their mission but also because we trust their commitment, innovation, and integrity. This is a partnership built on shared values and a vision for long-term success together."
Veramaris said the new facility will make the company the first in the algal oil industry to be able to store its ingredients at this scale.
