Red Lobster sees boost in foot traffic as LTOs, “newstalgic” refresh strategy anchor turnaround

After filing for bankruptcy in May 2024, the Orlando, Florida, U.S.A.-based restaurant chain has been on a long road to recovery, implementing multiple initiatives as part of a broader turnaround effort.

Those initiatives include restaurant redesigns, strategic closures, executive changes, and limited time offers (LTOs), including bringing back its Endless Shrimp promotion in April.

Though the promotion was cited as a primary factor in the firm’s bankruptcy, this time, the deal was offered for a limited time only, not as a standard menu item, and at a higher price point, all of which marked a departure from its original Ultimate Endless Shrimp program.

In the weeks before the Endless Shrimp relaunch, the average number of visits to each Red Lobster location was running below year-over-year levels and lagging behind the broader full-service restaurant segment, according to foot traffic data firm Placer.ai.

During the first full week of the promotion, however, Red Lobster's visits per location jumped, peaking at a 24 percent increase year over year for the week of 27 April and holding double-digit gains into early June.

“Notably, this outperformance came while full-service restaurant traffic remained roughly flat year over year,” Placer.ai said.

Due to that success, Red Lobster brought back its Endless Shrimp promotion on 17 August, again for a limited time.

"Our guests were thrilled to have Endless Shrimp back this spring and made it clear they wanted more – so we listened," Red Lobster CEO Damola Adamolekun said. "We proved we could bring it back in a way that delights our guests and works for our restaurant teams and our business. Now, we're bringing our fans more of the Endless experience they asked for.”

Meanwhile, Red Lobster has also embarked on a restaurant refresh strategy that is now focusing on revamping the physical space of each restaurant.

“Under [CEO] Damola Adamolekun’s leadership, the company has focused on Red Carpet Hospitality, stronger operational discipline, menu innovation, and the guest-favorite seafood experiences that define the brand,” Red Lobster told SeafoodSource in a statement. “Red Lobster knows guests are making more intentional decisions about where they spend their dining dollars. That makes value incredibly important, but value is not only about price. It is about what guests feel they get for the money: the food, the hospitality, the atmosphere, and the overall experience.”

Red Lobster confirmed guests will soon see updates to the exterior of locations, their arrival experience, dining rooms, seating, lighting, flooring, wall finishes, bar areas, and signature brand staples like the lobster tank inside each restaurant.

“Our goal is to give guests a stronger reason to choose Red Lobster and a stronger reason to come back,” Red Lobster said.

The company said restaurants that have already undergone a refresh include locations in Kissimmee, Florida; Clarksville, Tennessee; and Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and has identified the next group of locations slated for similar changes.

The company clarified that its refresh is an evolution of Red Lobster – not a departure from the brand – and has dubbed the approach “newstalgic,” meaning that it aims to preserve “familiar elements guests know and love while making the restaurant experience feel warmer, brighter, and more current.”

“The design is not about chasing any specific demographic. It is about creating a more relevant experience for today’s guests while honoring what has made Red Lobster familiar across generations,” Red Lobster said.

These latest efforts come after the chain closed a handful of restaurants earlier this year and made changes to its executive team with the appointments of Brad Hill as chief financial officer and Kristen Briede as chief global development officer.

“Brad’s role supports the financial rigor, performance discipline, and real estate strategy behind the business, while Kristen’s role is directly tied to Red Lobster’s development platform, including the restaurant refresh strategy, franchising, nontraditional formats, strategic partnerships, and retail and licensing opportunities,” Red Lobster said.

With all of its efforts combined, Red Lobster said it has “strong forward momentum, supported by sharper guest focus, improved operational discipline, and favorable financial performance.”

“The direction is clear: The team is focused on bringing guests through the doors, delivering Red Carpet Hospitality and fostering sustainable repeat visits,” it said.
