Another record for Norwegian salmon exports

It’s another record. Norwegian salmon exports reached an all-time high of 229,000 metric tons in the first quarter of 2012, up 31 percent from the corresponding period in 2011, the Norwegian Seafood Council reported earlier this week.

And, to no surprise, the value of Norwegian salmon exports in the first quarter of 2012 fell 9 percent to NOK 6.8 billion, compared to 2011.

“Despite the record growth seen in the volume of exports, the value of exports shows a decline. Lower prices during the first quarter of 2012 compared with the same period last year can be seen as a consequence of the increased volume of exports from Norway and from competing nations,” said Paul Aandahl, senior market analyst with the council.

However, prices are trending upwards again, according to the council. In the first quarter of 2012, the average export price for whole fresh Norwegian salmon totaled NOK 27.51, up 9 percent from the fourth quarter of 2011, but down NOK 12.51 from on the first quarter of 2011.

Though Norwegian salmon exports were up overall, exports to the United States took a dive, sliding 22 percent just over 4,000 metric tons in the first quarter of 2011.

And Russia has emerged as the No. 1 market for Norwegian salmon. Exports to the country reached 33,000 metric tons in the first quarter of 2011, up an impressive 68 percent from the corresponding period in 2011.
