Blue Star sues Heron Point over patents

American crabmeat seller Blue Star Foods’ parent company has filed a lawsuit in an American federal court against Heron Point Seafood, arguing patent infringement.

John Keeler & Co. filed the suit in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio last week. The patent at issue is for an airtight, flexible packaging for crabmeat the company claims it invented.

Heron Point is another American crabmeat distributor, based in Newmarket, N.H. Blue Star did not name a specific Heron Point product in its announcement of the lawsuit, but said there were two specific patents at issue.

“Our patents have significant market potential,” said John Keeler, Blue Star’s CEO. “We have full confidence in those patents and intend to defend our rights vigorously.”
