A married couple in California have pled guilty to illegally selling fish from their home, taking fish caught for sporting purposes and selling it commercially.
According to the California State Law Enforcement Association, the Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) began investigating Rohnert Park, California, residents Richard Tran and Shalley Tran in 2024 after being tipped off that the pair were processing sport-caught fish at their home and then selling it commercially. Investigators observed the Trans conducting illegal sales out of their home and other residences and businesses through the Bay Area. Investigators claim the couple have been likely illegally selling fish for more than a decade.
The investigation unearthed several legal violations in the Trans’ operation, including using an unregistered fishing vessel, utilizing individuals that were not commercial licensed, not having a Fish Receiver’s License, and not landing their catch, thereby evading landing fees, taxes, and documentation.
“This case demonstrates the value of tips from the public and how responsive CDFW officers are in investigating the information that comes in to them,” CSLEA President Alan Barcelona said in a statement. “We appreciate the law enforcement work of CDFW officers as they protect our natural resources and those businesses abiding by the laws and regulations.”
CDFW seized USD 66,000 (EUR 56,232) in cash from the Trans’ home, which was forfeited to the government. The couple have also been barred from any fishing activities for one year.
“Our Environmental and Consumer Law Division works with CDFW to ensure that individuals comply with commercial fishing regulations, which not only helps to preserve our natural resources but also promotes fair business practices,” California District Attorney Carla Rodriguez said in a release.
