Canada’s Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) said four individuals in the province of Nova Scotia have been arrested for undersized lobsters and unauthorized fishing.

DFO said on 31 May fishery officers arrested four at Saulnierville wharf in Nova Scotia after discovering undersized lobsters, while also determining the four individuals fished without authorization. Authorities seized a fishing vessel, 40 lobster traps, two crates, and 76 lobsters – 46 of which were under the minimum legal size.

“Enforcement of the minimum legal lobster carapace size in the fishery supports conservation because lobsters of legal size are likelier to have reproduced before they were fished,” DFO said.

DFO did not name the individuals and released the lobsters into the ocean after seizing them.
