Chicago chef wins Skuna Bay derby contest

Chicago-based chef Carlo Lamagna has been declared the winner of the first-ever Skuna Bay Taste of Derby contest in Kentucky.

Lamagna beat out 29 other competitors in a series of eliminations, culminating with the final round at the Kentucky Derby on 1 May, where he squared off with fellow finalist Andrew Sutton of Anaheim, Calif.

Both finalists were VIP guests at the famous horse race, and participated in a final round of cooking.

Lamagna took the top honors, which will earn him recognition in a national ad in Saveur magazine.

The 30 chefs were chosen in the first qualifying round. The chefs submitted a recipe featuring Skuna Bay salmon along with a photo between 25 February and 17 March.
