A new seafood processing plant and salesroom has been built for the fishermen of coastal town Los Molles, in the Valparaiso Region of Chile, which they will manage themselves.
The project is part of the “Te Quiero Caleta” program, developed by the country’s government, which seeks to support the activities and diversification of artisanal fisheries from a territorial perspective.
The Los Molles initiative was funded by the Undersecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Subpesca) through the Fisheries Administration Fund (FAP) and had a total cost of USD 145 million (EUR 129 million).
Undersecretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Raul Sunico, said the investment was aimed at helping the cove’s artisanal fishermen by establishing a system of direct sales through the processing plant.
Sunico highlighted that Los Molles’ fishing, dining and tourist activities are very complementary and have led to a significant increase in the revenues generated by fishermen.
