Six new vessels appear to be having an impact for China Aquatic Products Zhoushan Marine Fisheries Corp (it is often known as ZhouYu), which sells seafood products in China under the Mingzhu brand.
A statement from the company says an “outstanding performance” in the vessels’ first deployment will give the company an edge in fishing international waters. The boats pulled in 2,632.4 tons in two months – a company record. The firm has returned the vessels to China for maintenance before dispatching them to Peru.
Investment in “better vessels and better technology,” as well as higher staffing levels, are part of a strategy by company boss Wang Yan to increase the firm’s global catch and raise sales in China’s domestic market. The strategy is a departure from ZhouYu’s historical focus – in earlier decades, ZhouYu sought to process and export its catch.
Part of the state owned CNFC conglomerate, China Aquatic Products Zhoushan Marine Fisheries Corp operates out of the east coast Chinese city of Zhoushan, traditionally a fishing hub but one which has suffered in recent years from the depletion of stocks in China’s own waters.
