EUMOFA: Value of global trade in fishery products decreased in 2015

The latest report from the European Market Observatory for Fisheries and Aquaculture products is signaling that the value of fishery products globally dropped in 2015, countering a long-term trend that has seen the value of seafood rise steadily.

The drop was the result of a range of factors, EUMOFA said, including the strengthening of the U.S. dollar against many other currencies, the effects of El Niño and the economic slowdown of important emerging markets.

The dip in value in 2015 appears to be an anomaly, EUMOFA reported, predicting more stability in global markets leading to a rebound in value in 2016. Prices have fallen for most fish products, except for salmon, resulting from a shortage of supplies, EUMOFA said.
