Expo News: Seafood Expo showcases new seafood products

Innovations in packaging, flavored value-added products and easy-to-prepare meals were on display at the New Product Showcase at Seafood Expo Southern Europe this week in Barcelona, Spain.

Many professionals launched new aquaculture and seafood products to the market in the showcase at the expo, organized by Diversified Communications, the parent company of SeafoodSource.

The new "Sum boxes" were an example of that. The company Vivos Y Perecederos presented this new product. The packaging’s novelty is in its self-assembly. It is also recyclable and waterproof. Pablo Molinar, CEO of the company, told SeafoodSource that this new product saves costs and space. He said that the unit cost of a box compared with an expanded polystyrene box of 8 to 10 kg of seafood is 30 to 40 percent less.

Other innovative products follow the trend of the consumer who looks for food that is easy to prepare and with a tradition, but a different touch. Maresmar for example, launched their lobster bisque. It's an almost ready-made dish that includes the flavor of lobster.

Another innovation in the showcase was the Fish Snack’s of several flavors from Savia Nature. It is a crispy snack of fish skin of salmon and cod. Carolina Artiaga, export manager of Savia Natura, said the product has different flavors: Mediterranean, oriental, barbeque and curry, among others. She also added that they had good feedback from visitors of the exhibition with this product.

Seafood burgers, sausages, brochettes and meatballs made of salmon, tuna, bonito and swordfish were other innovative products developed and presented by the company Josmares. Being easy to eat, the products were marketed to children, sporty people and for people who want healthy products.

Cream cheese with caviar or caviar nacarii premium was other interesting innovative products at the showcase.
