Japanese, Russian players enter marketing, processing partnerships in China

With the peak period of seafood consumption in China approaching, local seafood distributors are scrambling for new concepts and products to satiate consumer demand.

A link-up between the Russian Fishery Co. and Qingdao-based Guoxing Foodstuffs Co., which owns the Haimai brand, has brought a new source of Russian crab into the Chinese market.

Guoxing is part-owned by Joyvio, the agro-foods wing of Legend Capital, one of China’s biggest investors. The company has opened a string of “Haimai” own-name stores intended both as a sales driver in their own right, in addition to pushing consumers to the firm’s various online stores.

Meanwhile, Qingdao Hai Xian Xiong Di Seafood Products Co., which trades under the Oceanese brand, has made a deal with Wan Song Qingdao Food Co. and Japan-based Ocean Leader to market a packaged range of Japanese style seafood dumplings. It’s a bid to capitalize on the affiliation of the Chinese middle class for Japanese dining.
