Marine Harvest to invest GBP 80m in UK

Marine Harvest has announced plans to invest GBP 80 million in its UK operations over the next five years.

The world’s largest farmed salmon producer said the move should create 100 more jobs in Scotland between 2012 and 2016. The company already operates 38 fish farms in Scotland, supporting about 460 jobs.

“We are committed to farming in Scotland, where the results show that top-quality salmon is in demand increasingly around the world. With people eating more salmon and the need to sustainably increase our production, we believe that further investment in Scotland is good for our business and the Scottish economy, the communities where we operate and our consumers,” said Ole-Eirik Leory, Marine Harvest chairman.

In 2009 Marine Harvest announced plans to increase annual production from 40,000 metric tons to 60,000 metric tons. Investment in new sea farms and a new hatchery are currently underway to achieve this 50 percent increase in tonnage by 2016.
