New deal to boost Shetland mussels

Shetland’s Blueshell Mussels Ltd. on Monday announced that it signed a deal with two local operations that it said will protect the future of Shetland’s mussel-farming industry.

Blueshell purchased the sea-service assets, including boats and equipment, of Demlane Ltd. The move allows Demlane to concentrate on its newly upgraded processing facility and create a platform to launch a new range of seafood products.

In addition, Blueshell singed an agreement to manage the 15 Shetland mussel-farming sites held by SI Seafarms Ltd., which were previously managed by Demlane.

The deal allows each company to focus on their strengths, creating economics of scale, efficiencies in processing and adding value throughout the supply chain, said Blueshell Mussels.
