Norway reports record exports in 1H

Norwegian seafood exports have totaled 26.9 billion (USD 4.3 billion, EUR 3.4 billion) for the first half of 2013, a 7.2 percent increase over last year that has set records, according to the Norwegian Seafood Council.

The council also reported a new all-time record for the month of June, with an increase of 6 percent over the same month in 2012.

“The high value of Norwegian seafood exports in the first half of 2013 is due primarily to record exports of Norwegian salmon and Fjord Trout, which totaled NOK 18.4 billion (USD 3 billion, EUR 2.3 billion),” said Terje Martinussen, the council’s CEO. “The results also show an increase in the value of exports from aquaculture, while exports from fishery fell by NOK 1.9 billion (USD 309 million, EUR 240.2 million) to a total of NOK 8.3 billion (USD 1.4 billion, EUR 1 billion).”

Fresh Norwegian cod exports, including fillets, were up 31 percent in value to a total of NOK 818 million (USD 133 million, EUR 103.4 million). Frozen cod exports were up, too, by 7 percent to a total of NOK 829 million (USD 134.8 million, EUR 104.8 million).

Other species, however, showed a decline in the first half of 2013 over last year. Herring exports fell in value by 41 percent to NOK 1.3 billion (USD 211.4 million, EUR 164.4 million). Mackerel dropped by 41 percent to NOK 643 million (USD 104.6 million, EUR 81.3 million). Clipfish also fell by 9 percent, and salted fish fell by 11 percent.
