Norwegian salmon exports in November of 2012 were higher by 13 percent compared to last year, according to a report from the Norwegian Seafood Council released this week.
Export volumes totaled more than 101,000 metric tons (MT), with a value of nearly NOK 3 billion (USD 528.7 million, EUR 408.8 million), a value increase of nearly NOK 472 million (USD 83.2 million, EUR 64.3 million), or 19 percent, compared to November of 2011. Year-to-date numbers show a total volume of 907,000 MT, an increase of 22 percent over 2011, with a value increase of 1 percent, or NOK 346 million (USD 61 million, EUR 47.1 million), compared to the same period last year.
“The growth in the value of exports in November is being driven primarily by volume growth,” said Paul Aandahl council market analyst. “Yet despite the strong growth in the volume of exports, prices for Norwegian salmon were higher than in November last year. This growth is being driven by continued positive trends in sales of fresh and smoked Norwegian salmon for domestic consumption in most markets.”
In November, the average export price for fresh whole Norwegian Salmon was NOK 27.10 (USD 4.78, EUR 3.69) per kilogram. This is NOK 2.03 (USD 0.36, EUR 0.27) higher than in November last year and NOK 1.36 (USD 0.24, EUR 0.19) up on the previous month.
Exports to the EU compared to November of 2011, while salmon exports to Russia — the No. 1 market for Norwegian salmon — went down. Norwegian exports to the EU, according to the report, were “above average,” increasing by 16 percent. For individual EU countries, volumes going to Poland went up the most, by 33 percent.
In Russia, volumes in October increased by 21 percent, but in November they were down over last year, dropping 5 percent, but the report also noted that year-to-date trend numbers show a 33 percent volume growth over 2011, to a total of 120,000 MT.
