Norwegian seafood exports on a roll

Norwegian seafood exports topped NOK 3 billion (USD 508 million, EUR 350 million) for the eighth straight month in August, up 26 percent from August 2008, the Norwegian Seafood Export Council (NSEC) reported late last week.

Through August, the country’s seafood exports totaled NOK 26.9 billion (USD 4.6 billion, EUR 3.1 billion), up NOK 4.3 billion from the same eight-month period last year.

Norwegian salmon exports reached NOK 1.9 billion (USD 322 million, EUR 222 million) in August, up 39 percent from August 2008, and the export price for fresh Norwegian salmon tallied NOK 30.29 (USD 5.13, EUR 3.53) per kilogram in August, down NOK 6.43 (USD 1.09, EUR 0.75) from July.

Through August, Norwegian salmon exports totaled NOK 14.7 billion (USD 2.9 billion, EUR 1.7 billion), up NOK 3.6 billion from the same period last year.

“The growth in seafood exports is first and foremost being driven by exports of Norwegian salmon,” said Egil Ove Sundheim, director of market information for NESC. “An increase in the volume of Norwegian salmon exports, combined with higher prices, has seen the value of Norwegian salmon exports in August increase by almost 40 percent compared to August 2008.”

Norwegian salmon exports to the United States were particularly strong at 3,600 metric tons in August, up fivefold from August 2008. In August, the United States was the sixth largest export market for Norwegian salmon. Meanwhile, Norwegian salmon exports to the European Union were up 18 percent in August, to 7,200 metric tons, with the strongest growth originating from Denmark, Poland and France.

Norwegian trout exports reached NOK 153 million (USD 25.9 million, EUR 17.8 million) in August, up 71 percent from August 2008. Through August, they totaled NOK 1.3 billion (USD 220 million, EUR 152 million), up NOK 204 million from the same period last year.

Norwegian herring and mackerel exports also increased substantially in value in August, up 100 percent and 125 percent, respectively, from August 2008. Last month, herring exports reached NOK 68 million (USD 11.5 million, EUR 8 million), while mackerel exports hit NOK 39 (USD 6.6 million, EUR 4.5 million).
