P.E.I. mussel industry gets funding boost

The Prince Edward Island mussel industry has received a major boost from government.

Canadian Fisheries Minister Keith Ashfield and Regional Minister for Prince Edward Island Gail Shea on Wednesday announced that Ottawa will invest almost CAD 970,000 to support three innovative aquaculture programs on the island.

Confederation Cove Mussel Co. in Borden-Carleton will receive CAD 505,773 for a project to develop and improve the grading process in Canadian mussel plants. The province contributed CAD 42,225 from the P.E.I. Aquaculture and Fisheries Research Initiative to the development and testing of this grading technology.
