The Icelandic fishing fleet landed seafood totaling 73,610 metric tons (MT) last month, a decrease of 20 percent compared with January 2015, according to new figures published by Statistics Iceland.
While the country’s total demersal catch grew by 10 percent to 35,156 MT, thanks to a 30 percent rise in its cod landings, it was not enough to offset a 38 percent drop in the pelagic catch.
Fishermen landed 36,148 MT of pelagic fish last month, including 1,497 MT of capelin, which was 97 percent less than in January 2015. They also landed 1,520 MT of flatfish, an increase of 79 percent, and 787 MT of shellfish, up 148 percent.
During the last 12-month period, Iceland has landed almost 1.3 million MT of seafood, an increase of 17 percent year-on-year.
