Salty Girl Seafood founders win leadership award

Laura Johnson and Norah Eddy, the founders of Salty Girl Seafood, have won a leadership award from the Specialty Food Association.

Johnson and Eddy were awarded the prize in the vision category, honoring business leaders who have “gone above and beyond in advancing food standards in society – and society itself – by creating social, economic and environmental impact through innovation and vision.” Their awards will be presented during the Winter Fancy Food Show in San Francisco on 22 January, 2017.

“We are so honored to be recognized by the SFA among other entrepreneurs who have made such incredible positive impacts in their respective industries,” Eddy said. “To be acknowledged in the ‘Vision’ category in particular, as a mission-based company, makes it that much more rewarding to know that we are not only developing a brand that feeds people great food, but we’re building something that enables people to vote with their dollar and make a positive impact through their everyday decisions.”

Salty Girl Seafood, founded in 2014 and based in Santa Barbara, California, is dedicated to making “sustainable, traceable, simple to prepare seafood products that incentivize sustainable fishing practices and promote stewardship of oceans.” As part of that mission, in August, Johnson and Eddy pledged to donate one percent of the company's annual revenues to the Wild Salmon Center to help protect wild salmon habitat.

"These…individuals are leading examples of specialty food entrepreneurs who are truly making a difference," said Phil Kafarakis, president of the Specialty Food Association. "In our growing industry, leaders like these are paving the way for other companies to succeed and become recognized names. It's our honor to acknowledge their achievements through the Leadership Awards."
