Scotland salmon exports to U.S. boosted after SENA15

The export of salmon from Scotland to the United States is at an all-time high, according to an article on the International Business Times. The recent Seafood Expo North America played a vital role in this uptick.

The U.S. has continued to be Scotland’s leading market for salmon exports over the past five years, with exports showing a total growth of almost 40 percent. Americans consume about 215 million pounds of salmon a year, with key cities for salmon consumption including New York, Miami, Los Angeles and Boston, particularly within retail chains and restaurants.

During Seafood Expo North America, which was held 15 March through 17 March, 1,000 exhibitors from more than 40 countries displayed for 19,000 visitors and thousands of key buyers. Scott Landsburgh, chief executive of the Scottish Producers’ Organization, said the figures from the show are a result of the reputation his salmon has gained in the U.S.

“Quality and Scottish provenance are key to the American market,” he said. “…The industry has been supported by Scottish Development International to open more market opportunities for Scottish salmon, making the USA our largest export market.

The Expo allowed Scottish exhibitors to meet with key buyers from top American retail and food service companies. The increased exports are also a boost to the Scottish salmon industry. Almost 2,2000 people are employed in this industry, with more companies entering in to feed the demand in the American market.
