Seafish suspends duties after ruling

The United Kingdom’s Court of Appeal on Thursday ruled in favor of the British Seafood Group in a lawsuit involving uncollected duties on imported seafood allegedly owed to Seafish.

Initially, the High Court sided with Seafish in mid-2009, but the British Seafood Group appealed the decision. In a lawsuit filed in late 2008, the London-based company contested a requirement forcing it to pay duties on seafood it imported.

But following Thursday’s ruling, Seafish suspended duties on imported seafood, the industry organization said in a 19 March letter.

“We are clearly disappointed by this latest ruling,” said Seafish CEO John Rutherford in the letter, adding that Seafish intends to appeal the Court of Appeal’s decision.

The British Seafood Group is currently in administration.
