An extensive program of activities and events marked the second day of Seafood Expo Southern Europe, formerly Seafood Barcelona, organized by Diversified Communications, the parent company of SeafoodSource.
Among them was a culinary demonstration by Spanish Chef Dani García. Titled “Fish in the nouvelle cuisine,” García showed off modern cuisine dishes and seafood products.
In other gastronomy-related events, Pablo Ávila, representative of the European Institute of Mediterranean Food and the Chef Diego Gallegos, presented a master class discussion of aquaculture and Mediterranean.
Another master class focused on lobster, presented by Joanne Losier, senior project executive for processing and market development of New Brunswick, Canada’s Department of Agriculture, Aquaculture & Fisheries.
At the end of the day, the Spanish regional government of Catalonia will present the 2014 Catalan Fishing Awards, which recognize those who have contributed to the development of Catalonia’s fishing industry.
Among the awards, the Guild of seafood products’ wholesalers of Mercabarna received the Catalonian fishery prize for its “Centro Interactivo del Pescado,” an interactive seafood products museum. The center is known for showing the tour of finfish and shellfish from their capture until their arrival to the final consumer. Around 7,000 children between 8 and 11 years old visit this space every year.
Other prize winners include Ann Garriga Ripoll, economy lecturer at the University of Girona and the author of several studies on the commercialization of fish in the fish markets of the Costa Brava, and the Catalan Association of Fish Farming for its defense, dissemination and promotion of the Catalan fish farming.
