Seafood Expo blog: Welcome to Barcelona!

Seafood Expo Southern Europe, formerly known as Seafood Barcelona, opened its doors to visitors Monday in Fira Barcelona — Gran Vía, turning Barcelona into the center of the seafood industry for the next few days.

Representatives from important seafood companies, associations and business federations from more than 25 countries attended and exhibited at the expo, organized by Diversified Communications, the parent company of SeafoodSource.

This show, scheduled for 22 to 24 September 2014 in Barcelona, Spain, has a complete program of activities and special events.

On Monday, 22 September, culinary demonstrations included chef Isaac Loya from the El Real Balneario Restaurant, in Salinas, Spain, showing the main species and recipes that they cook. Attendees got a chance to taste tuna and red mullet. There were also presentations from the expo’s Master Class series, where industry professionals learned more about Atlantic salmon with a focus on Norwegian salmon and farming, how to source, select, handle and prepare them, among other tasting events organized by different exhibitors.

Regarding the conferences, the expo started with a session about support for processing, marketing and commercialization of seafood products under the Common Fisheries Policy 2014-2020. At noon it was time for the aquaculture, with an overview session “Responsible Aquaculture” organized by the Global Aquaculture Alliance, and a congress addressing the Mediterranean aquaculture producers.

As in previous editions of the show, visitors can discover the latest seafood products launching in the Mediterranean seafood market in the “New product showcase.”

The business day ended with an official visit in the morning attended by Carlos María Larrañaga, director general for fisheries management of Spain’s Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Environment; Aurora de Blas Carbonero, deputy director general for fisheries economy of the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Environment; Josep Lluis Bonet, president of Fira Barcelona’s board of directors and Mary Larkin, Group VP and Publisher at Diversified Communications, among others.
