National trade and marketing body Seafood Scotland has launched a new collaboration with the Central Fish Market at Mercabarna, Barcelona, Spain as a means of enhancing market access for the Scottish seafood industry.
Seafood Scotland said the collaboration with the market – one of the largest wholesale markets for fresh food in Europe – will enhance data sharing and give Scottish seafood businesses access to market intelligence in Europe. The increased data and access will also come with product education and give the industry a better understanding of shifting consumer preferences so Scotland’s seafood businesses can tailer products for local demand in Spain.
“Mercabarna is at the heart of Europe’s seafood trade, and this partnership opens valuable doors for Scotland,” Seafood Scotland Head of Trade Marketing – Europe Marie-Anne Omnes said. “It will help our producers strengthen relationships with buyers, gain insight into emerging trends and ensure Scottish seafood continues to meet the needs of a changing market.”
The trade body said Scotland exported GBP 91 million (USD EUR) worth of seafood to Spain in 2022, which included products like langoustines, scallops, and live shellfish. Demand has continued to rise as well, as younger generations in Spain eat increasing amounts of sushi – which frequently utilizes Scottish salmon.
Seafood Scotland said according to figures from Mercabarna, Scottish salmon sales increased by 18 percent between 2023 and 2024.
Seafood Scotland said the collaboration can also serve as a bridge between the two markets and help connect Scottish suppliers with Spanish buyers.
“The partnership also builds on Seafood Scotland’s ongoing annual presence in Barcelona at Seafood Expo Global, reinforcing its commitment to deepening connections with key European markets and fostering long-term collaboration across the seafood supply chain,” Seafood Scotland said.
