Sofrimar crowned Ireland’s top seafood exporter

Sofrimar Ltd. was named Ireland’s Seafood Exporter of the Year 2011 at the annual Export Industry Awards in Dublin on Friday.

The company is based in Kilmore Quay, Co. Wexford, Ireland, and 80 percent of its business is in shellfish, including scallops, crab, live lobster, langoustines, shrimp, whelk and winkles; whitefish, including monkfish and sole, makes up the remaining 20 percent.

Leslie Bates, Sofrimar’s managing director, credited the company’s management and staff and local fishermen. “The award is a testament to the dedication and commitment of our management and staff. It would not have been possible without the quality of supply sourced from local fishermen and the continued support of our many customers worldwide,” he said. “It is a significant achievement for Sofrimar and I would like to dedicate the award to all who have contributed to this success.”

According to Sofrimar, the judges were particularly impressed with the strong growth Sofrimar has achieved, its success in market development and product innovation and its focus on research and development.

The award was presented by Richard Bruton, Ireland’s minister for enterprise, trade and employment.
