Spanish companies look East at Polfish 2009

Marcultura, Euskan and the Fund for the Regulation and Market Organization of Fishery and Aquaculture (FROM) were among the handful of Spanish companies and organizations exhibiting at last week’s biennial Polfish International Fair of Fish Processing and Seafood Products in Gdansk, Poland.

“The exhibition was an opportunity to meet new partners in Poland,” said Juan Queiro, director of marketing for Marcultura. “We normally sell to German markets. However, we are now expanding our sales and marketing efforts to new Eastern European markets including Poland, Russia and the Ukraine.”

Euskan, which manufactures fish-handling equipment, including a live fish-pumping system, also capitalized on the opportunity to showcase its products to the growing Eastern European market.

“Poland is a very important market for us as we have seen a lot of interest for our products, especially our pumps installed on trawlers for emptying the net and pumping from the vessel to land,” said Brian Birkelund, the company’s sales manager. “We have installed several pumps in Poland and have quoted for several more, so it was important for us to meet our clients at the show.

“Furthermore we have sold pumps for the live carp and trout industry in Poland, and we knew our live fish graders would also be requested,” Birkelund continued. “At the show we exhibited a vacuum pump for fishing vessels and a trout vacuum pump for the live fish industry. We had several meetings at the show for future projects and we closed a few orders on the quotes we had already provided. It can be difficult to locate potential clients in Poland so it was a useful opportunity for us to meet most of them at the show.”

Representing Spain’s Ministry of the Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs, FROM focuses on promoting seafood consumption; orientating markets in relation to product quantities, prices and quality; and aiding the seafood industry’s associations, cooperatives and businesses in their technical or financial needs.
