Thai Union Frozen Products on Wednesday confirmed that potential difficulties with shrimp and tuna raw materials, including floods and landslides in Thailand and the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, are not affecting its business.
Thailand’s leading producer and exporter of canned and frozen seafood said sufficient raw materials are being procured and supplied to its processing plants uninterrupted, and the company remains confident that it will achieve its target revenues and sales growth of 30 percent this year.
Thai Union said it is unharmed in terms of sales volume and flow of raw material supplies despite damages to shrimp farming areas due to flooding in southern Thailand. Sufficient shrimp supplies are being delivered to the company’s processing plants, and raw material prices have not changed. Both shrimp processing plants in Samutsakorn and Songkhla provinces are sill operating at full capacity.
In response to concerns that tuna caught near Japan may be affected radioactive contamination, Thai Union has discontinued its tuna procurement from the affected areas and turned to other areas in the western Pacific and Indian oceans. In addition, the company is requiring that each lot of tuna be sent to Thailand Institute of Nuclear Technology for inspection for potential contamination.
