Thai Union: We’re prepared for floodwaters

Thiraphong Chansiri, president of Thai Union Frozen Products, on Monday said that Thailand’s floodwaters have not yet affected the company’s operations, but he continues to monitor the situation very closely.

Thai Union’s seafood processing plant is located in Mueang district of Samut Sakhon province, which lies in the projected path of the water flow from flooded areas to the Tha Chin River. The company said it is prepared for any potential flooding, as it has erected a sandbag barrier around the plant’s property and has several water pumps on standby.

(Also on Monday, Thai Union released its third-quarter results, including record-breaking revenues and profits.)

Samut Sakhon province is located just west of Bangkok, where floodwaters are slowly advancing through the city’s northern and western neighborhoods. Evacuations have reportedly been ordered in 12 of Bangkok’s 50 districts.

Meanwhile, Thai shrimp exports are facing tougher quality inspections by importing countries concerned about diseases arising from the flooding, Panisuan Jamnarnwej, president of the Thai Frozen Foods Association, told the Bangkok Post on Monday. He said random quality inspections had increased fivefold for shipments to the United States, though exporters confirmed there have been no disease outbreaks.
