A study done for the European Parliament’s Committee on Fisheries forecasts a doubling in aquaculture production by 2013 and looks at the main technologies and trends that would be needed to ensure the growth. In her November commentary, Nicki Holmyard reviewed the study, noting that despite hopes for growth during the past decade, EU aquaculture production only saw a .5 percent increase compared to global growth of 7 percent in the same period. Major challenges to aquaculture growth include the need to restructure and meet changing market demands as well as matching evolving customer preferences. Strategic challenges include adapting policies to incorporate aquaculture and better communication to address public perceptions.
