This deep-sea rarity is as old as it is scary – it is considered to be the only extant representative of the family Mitsukurinidae, a lineage some 125 million years old. This species of shark typically occupies upper continental slopes, submarine canyons and seamounts in depths of 100 meters or more around the world. Goblin sharks love to eat other sharks and sea rays; they also typically consume squids and crustaceans.
